Waakye truly is, in my opinion, the meanest street food alive.. Photo by Antonis Achilleos / Prop Styling by Christina Daley / Food Styling by Margaret Monroe Dickey.Waakye (also called awaakye) is more than one thing.
First off, it's rice and beans. The word "waakye" is from the Hausa language, and is the contracted form of the full name "shinkafa da wake," which means rice and beans. This explanation is supported by origins of the dish being placed in Northern Ghana with the Hausa communities, whose staple crops are rice and beans.
So waakye is simply "rice and beans."It's made with fragrant basmati rice or jasmine rice and beans (usually black-eyed peas or cow beans), cooked together with waakye leaves (sorghum leaves or stalks) that lend their pink-reddish brown hue to the rice.
Oftentimes limestone or baking soda is added to bring out the subtle flavor of the leaves and deepen the coloring.
The leaves are usually removed before serving, however I always retain the dramatic architecturally sharp edges of the stalks poking out for aesthetic reasons. It's usually smart to compare costs and delivery options from all the most popular big-box retailers: Home Depot, Lowe's, Best Buy, Costco, Walmart, and, of course, Amazon..
If you live near a brick-and-mortar store, browsing in person can be extremely helpful.Even if you know you want to buy online later, it's nice to be able to interact with an appliance in person to judge things like how easy it is to bend down and open the bottom oven on the range you're considering or how much space is really in the chest freezer you're eyeing, which can make decision-making much easier.. How long should kitchen appliances last?.
The longevity of your kitchen appliances varies based on the type of appliance, brand, and how well you treat and maintain it.A general rule is to expect about 10 years from new, well-maintained appliances.
